Southampton Township is a rural community in south-central New Jersey, U.S.A. It covers a total of 43.31 square miles, 74% of it located in the Pinelands Preserve . The community has a population of 10,388* according to the 2000 census. The historic village of Vincentown is at the center of the community on the south branch of the Rancocas Creek and is the location of the municipal government headquarters. Southampton Township is intersected by three major highways: North/South Route 206 and East/West Route 38 and Route 70 (Click here for map).
* NOTE: According to a 2006 census update published in the Burlington County Times on July 8, 2007, the latest census estimate shows a 6.1% increase since 2000 (640 individuals) to make the new population total 11,028.Interesting Facts about Southampton Township:
Southampton Township has the 2nd highest senior population in the seven suburban counties of Philadelphia in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. 31.7% of Southampton's population is over the age of 65, second only to Mansfield Township with 31.9%. (From an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer 10/2/05). The horse population of Southampton is approximately 600 -- the largest in Burlington County. There are only three remaining dairy farms in Burlington County, all of them in Southampton Township!

"We turn right from 206 onto Main Street, where postcard houses, Victorian street lamps and baskets of exuberantly purple petunias announce we've come to someplace special. Sure enough, the Vincentown section of Southampton Township seems a bit like Brigadoon to this first-time visitor".

Its streets -- all eight of them -- could be transplanted bodily to Massachusetts or Indiana or a mountain valley in Pennsylvania and look right at home."
Dan Eisenhuth, Burlington County Times, Fall, 1977At a recent focus group dealing with future plans for the Route 206 corridor, Vincentown was the first choice of a group of 30 individuals who were asked to rank a series of slides depicting various scenes. "Leading the list ... was a view of downtown Vincentown with its tree-lined streets, wrought-iron benches, and middle-of-the-block clock. Gazebos, front porches and picket fences also scored high."

The cover of the guide featured a picture of the historic "Boat House" on Race Street, overlooking the waterfalls of the Vincentown Mill Pond dam. Author of the Vincentown page (42), Wilford Shamlin, writes: "Visit the historic village of Vincentown and journey back in time. Victorian-era homes dot tree-lined streets, a quaint downtown and church bells that ring on the hour harken back to Vincentown in the early 19th century." Only in Southampton! Our community is unique in many ways, not the least in the names of some of its roads. Besides "Bed Bug Hill Road," you'll find names that probably don't exist in any other communities: Beaver Dam Road, Bent Tree Trail, Big Hill Road, Hog Farm Road, Miss Mabel Drive, Ongs Hat Road, Possum Hollow Road, Purgatory Road and Sooy Place Road. We even have two streets with names that reflect exactly why people like it here: Serenity Court and Tranquility Court!Perhaps the only stream in the world with a name reflecting an incident involving a runaway horse, "Stop the Jade Run" meanders through Southampton Township, sometimes overflowing its banks and causing inconveniences to local cows, pedestrians and motor vehicles.
One section of Southampton which prompts inquiries is Red Lion, the area just off the intersection of Routes 206 and 70. The common explanation of how Red Lion got its name appeared in "Forgotten Towns of Southern New Jersey" by Henry Charlton Beck. Click here for Red Lion story.
Vincentown is the only community in New Jersey to be chosen by Reminisce Magazine to display a set of nostalgic Burma-Shave signs. In 1996, five Burma-Shave sign replicas were placed on Landing Street along the Jack Allen Farm just outside the village of Vincentown. They read: TODAY'S KIDS...SURE MISSED A TREAT...NO MOONLIGHT RIDES...IN A RUMBLE SEAT. The final sign contains the logo of the sponsor, Reminisce Magazine. Town Historian Dot Best entered Vincentown into Reminisce's unique contest at the urging of Jack Allen, on whose property the signs are located. All Signs Point to Nostalgia
For 14 years, Southampton Township has been designated as a Tree City USA community, based on criteria established by The National Arbor Day Foundation. To qualify, a town must have in place a Shade Tree Commission, A Tree Care Ordinance, A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day Observance and Proclimation.
