SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP SCHOOLS

As you scroll below, you will find pictures and statistical information about the schools of Southampton Township. In addition, there is a section on the history of education in Southampton Township, with pictures of some of our historic school buildings. When this site was originally constructed, Southampton Township Schools did not have their own web site. However, beginning with the 2001 school year, there is a brand new schools web site. HISTORY OF EDUCATION IN VINCENTOWN AND SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP

The Vincentown one-room schoolhouse (c. 1860) located on Race Street, was one of two private schools located in the Village of Vincentown. Originally, this school house stood on Main Street on property owned by the Allen Oil Company. It was donated to the Southampton Historical Society and in 1981, was moved to its present location and restored. The exact date of the opening and close of this school is unknown. The second private school was located on Plum St., known as "The Herbert School." John G. Herbert, Esq., a Yale University graduate, was the school master. His daughter, Susanna, was the music teacher and composed many musical scores.

The first "public school" house was built in 1863 and located on Pleasant Street. The most popular school master of this school was William K. Haines. He lived on Pleasant Street with his wife, Mary, who was also a teacher (but never taught with William).

Among the other schools in the community was the New Freedom School, which was moved from Eayrestown Road to Red Lion on October 18, 1923 and became "Wiley Chapel", a part of the Red Lion Faith Church Community.

Across Red Lion Road from the Red Lion Faith Church is the old Red Lion School. It was also known as the Beaver Dam School. Originally located on Ridge Road between Rt. 206 and Red Lion Road where the Verizon Phone Exchange building is now located.

The so-called "Retreat School" was located on Philos Bridge Road, just outside of Vincentown. It is currently the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church.
